Using Excel to Teach Business Efficiency Models PDF Print E-mail

Fredrick Taylor
Father of Time & Motion Studies
Sometimes knowing what to teach largely comes out of knowing how to introduce a topic. Excel spreadsheets fit right into an example of this.

In my classroom, computer applications I often looks at how speadsheet knowledge can be useful to students. One example of this involves showing students how to create a time analysis chart. This is particularly important you want to discuss how business work at trying to be building economies of scale through time and motion measurements in an attempt to increase worker efficiency.

As for my class, I introduce the important contributions of Fredrick W. Taylor and his time and motion studies. Often students find this topic a bit dry but if you link it with something like a time analysis summary where they need to total the hours they spend in a given 24 hour period or a 168 hour 7 week cycle. It stresses the value of the ability to multitask in today's world as well as the processes that are used to determine how helpful time estimates are for work related tasks and activities.
